Fabian Mattern

B747 Captain, TRI, LTC and Deputy Chief Pilot at Cargolux Airlines International

Fabian began his professional aviation career in 2001, completing his training within the Lufthansa Pilot Training Network. He initially flew as a First Officer on the Airbus A320 with FlyNiki in Vienna and later operated the Airbus A320 and A330 with LTU on short/medium and long-haul flights.

He joined Cargolux Airlines International in 2008 as a First Officer on the Boeing 747. Shortly thereafter, he assumed additional responsibilities in flight crew training, first as a Theoretical Knowledge Instructor (TKI) and later as a Type Rating Instructor (TRI). During this period, he contributed to several key Training Department projects, including the development of recurrent ground training programs and the creation of Boeing 747‑8F training material, for which Cargolux was a launch customer.

Between 2017 and 2018, he was a key project team member acting as Training and Recruitment Specialist where he was also nominated to the Pilot Selection Board.

Following his upgrade to Captain in 2020, Fabian resumed duties as TRI and became Line Training Commander (LTC). At the same he also joined the Chief Pilot’s Office as Recruitment Coordinator with a strong focus on pre-selection and individual recruitment projects. In early 2026 Fabian was nominated as Deputy Chief Pilot. His professional focus lies at the interface of flight operations, training and organizational development, with particular emphasis on external representation, pilot recruitment strategy, and the alignment of recruitment initiatives with Flight Operations objectives.
